SPETSES ISLAND, SARONIC GULF, GREECE
The name of Spetses originates from the Italian word “Spezia” (Spice). In the 15th Century, the Venetians named it like this due to its major important position; over time the name was Hellenised to Spetsai (Spetses). Spetses is famous for its naval contribution to the 1821 War of Independence from the Turks and still having a vibrant reflection of that era with its neoclassical architecture.
